A brief introduction to using Jupyter Notebooks, which allow for interactive coding in several languages and documentation via Markdown.

Learning Objectives and Agenda

In this course, participants will:

• Start a Jupyter Notebook session on a cluster via the Open OnDemand portal
• Learn to manage notebooks
• Practice with both Python and Markdown

A typical outline of the topics covered in this primer is provided below. Because of the interactive nature of this course, some of the topics listed below may be introduced in a different order and covered to different depths.

• Connecting to the cluster
• Launching Jupyter
• Navigation and notebook management
• Running Python code
• Writing Markdown cells

Note: During the class sessions many aspects of the material will be illustrated live via a login to a training system. Attendees will complete these parts along with the instructor on their own devices.
